Cosplayers: Don’t Be Afraid of Stretch Fabrics!

Every now and then I hear something along the lines of “I’ve heard stretch fabrics are really hard to use!” or “I’ve been told to avoid stretch fabrics” and as a fan of stretch fabrics, I’d like to challenge that assumption. ;P

I am completely self taught in my experiences with knit/stretch fabric. All of the above costumes feature various stretch fabrics, or may even be entirely comprised of stretch material. They have a lot of advantages over woven fabrics, the main thing being flexibility (both in literal wear and in how they can be used). They’re easier to fit, they tend to wrinkle less, they provide unique textures and luster, they’re comfortable, can be used for swimming, don’t necessarily require edge finishing (because they generally don’t fray), and so on and so forth. They can even be used in junction with woven fabrics, you are not limited to using only one or the other, even in the same garment!

They’re DIFFERENT than woven fabrics, yes, and even different stretch fabrics will stretch in different ways and sometimes require special needs. They may roll or curl up if left unfinished, thus require zigzag stitching, wooly nylon thread, and/or overlocking stitches (so the stitch doesn’t break when stretched), and sometimes different patterning than what wovens would use for a similar look. But to me, these are small challenges that can easily be outweighed by all of the good qualities of stretch fabrics. So if you ever are considering it, don’t get scared away by all the ominous warnings. Just take some time to research it, play with it, and experiment. They are wonderful fabrics that have endless possibilities!

One thing that will help a LOT though is having a serger. ;P Sergers can create a stronger and more stretch-friendly stitch that will truly enhance the quality of a knit garment. Cover-stitch machines are also useful for knits, but for more advanced techniques like binding, finishing hems, etc.

Seriously though, I look forward to whenever I get to use a knit in any garment or costume. They are actually rather friendly once you get to know them. ;D

Some Items Knit/Stretch Fabrics are Useful For:

Super hero costumes, swim suits, leotards, leggings, pants/shorts, skirts, lingerie, pajamas, hoodies, caps/hats, stockings, bootcovers, legwarmers, gloves, figure-forming dresses, bodysuits/catsuits, blouses, capes, chokers/armbands/etc.

Can also be for covering items such as headbands, masks, wings, shoes, piping, etc.

Just a Few Types of Knit/Stretch Fabrics:

spandex, interlock knit, jersey knit, nylon, stretch mesh, tricot/milliskin, fleece, faux fur, plush, velvet, satin, lamé, vinyl, pleather, lining, denim, suiting, etc.

Edit: Some of the above examples of fabric can either be woven (nonstretch) or knit (stretch), OR also woven with stretch fibers (so there is slight stretch, often 1-way or 2-way stretch). So, velvet, satin, denim, etc. can have no stretch, have some stretch, or be REALLY stretchy! Depending on your project, selecting the right amount of stretch will really help. ;D
